Hi Eds,
Is there any concrete interest in Bruno Guimaraes?

Colney Bandit

{Ed002's Note - Arsenal are interested again after a move to Benfica fell through at the last minute (pen in hand).}

18 Nov 2019 15:50:26
Hi Eds,

what do you make of the Xhaka to Milan rumours? Also do the reports saying Torreira is unhappy with game time and his position have any truth behind them?

Colney Bandit

{Ed002's Note - He wants out and if Milan are suggested it is likely speculation or a loan. If leaving in January a loan would be most likely. Betancourt has made clear the player is unhappy with the coach and wants to look for opportunities in Italy.}

1.) 19 Nov 2019 11:51:37
Xhaka is more than welcome to leave, Torreira however, is a useful player, and I would like to see him get a lengthy run in the team. I understand the frustration of sitting on the bench while Xhaka the elephant charges around aimlessly, but if he can't be persuaded to stay, it's better he goes. We will of course need capable replacements for both. I shan't hold my breath.

2.) 19 Nov 2019 23:02:48
If we lose Torreira and keep Emery it will be modern Arsenal in a nutshell. The man is our best midfielder and he can't get a game in a position we desperately need him to play in. Every man and his dog can see our midfield is horribly unbalanced and our defence is absurdly exposed.

I'm not the sack-the-manager type, never called for Wenger's head in all his years, but I can't stand the sight of Emery grimacing and sucking his teeth on the touchline while Torreira sits on the bench.

3.) 20 Nov 2019 02:37:33
Off Xhaka. Pochettino has done a fantastic job at spurs considering he’s spent just over 100 mil in the 5 years he’s been there and not giving him the season suns Spurs up. Ed. Footballs a crazy game and with Enrique who we were strongly linked with basically back with the Spain national team, would be be some Arsenal would be interested in if/ when Arsenal sack Emery?

4.) 20 Nov 2019 08:08:24
What other Spurs manager has ever finished top 4 in 4 consecutive seasons? I've been following football since 1972 and I don't think all they're other managers combined during that 47 seasons have achieved top 4 as many times as Poch did in 5 years.

{Ed001's Note - and which of them has been handed a net spend over the period which equals the league leaders? And has had as many seasons where most of the other competing teams have been struggling with problems? United and Arsenal, for example, had come to the end of long-term projects and are a mess. They only stat that matters, with regards to Poch, is he won f all and would not have won a thing if he had been there 50 years, even if his only competition was Leicester City. We seen how his teams fold under pressure. He got lucky to take over a team with potential in a weak Prem.}

5.) 20 Nov 2019 09:24:51
Arteta my 1st choice

6.) 21 Nov 2019 07:02:46
Was Pochettino a victim of being at the home of failure? Would he be successful at Arsenal, a club that has won trophies? Think Sol Campbell, made the switch and quickly won trophies.

22 Jul 2019 14:54:57
Hi Eds,

with Koscielny looking likely to be moved on, do you see us buying a replacement? All this talk over signing Zaha for 60-80m and no apparent interest in a new first team CB is extremely worrying!

Colney Bandit

{Ed002's Note - There is interest in Saliba. He will be integrated if he does not go back on loan. Else it will depend on sales and money.}

1.) 22 Jul 2019 16:34:41
I thought he was 100% going back on loan Ed?

{Ed002's Note - That is the plan but Arsenal are unhappy with it still. I expect he will and predict Arsenal may need to look to someone like Gary Cahill or Kolodziejczak. Thomas Vermaelen is also available.}

2.) 22 Jul 2019 16:44:15
Do you think Saliba will go back on loan if Kosc is sold? Media reporting that the deal could only be done if he was to return on loan to St Ettiene.

{Ed002's Note - I have explained this over the past month or two.}

3.) 22 Jul 2019 16:52:51
Hi ed I thought his club only wanted to sell if they kept him on loan, so is there a possibility of him being in the squad For this season?

{Ed002's Note - So I have explained. But Arsenal want him now and have asked St Et in the USA of this is possible somehow. But I don't expect it to happen.}

4.) 22 Jul 2019 17:00:52
Vamaelen was always better going forward than defensively so I'm not sure he'd be of any help are all unless of corse he's learned the noble art of defending during his time elsewhere.

5.) 22 Jul 2019 23:44:14
Mustafi, Nacho and Vermaelen- perfect back 3 if we aim for 5 3 score line 😂😂💤💤💤

05 Jul 2019 11:29:41
Hi Eds,

Any truth in the reports saying we have submitted a bid of around 30m for Lucas Vazquez? Would be embarrassing if so, given that much younger, more dangerous wingers seem available for the same price.

Colney Bandit

{Ed002's Note - Putting aside whether or not a firm offer has been made, Arsenal have been offered the player after Inter Milan eased their interest as their focus changed to other players. Lucas Vazquez is one of many Real Madrid players being moved on and the club will be open to an offer around €30M or so. West Ham also enquired about the player. Arsenal have been unable to afford or tempt the players they want at RW and are looking to the likes of Vazquez and Malcom.}

1.) 05 Jul 2019 14:07:56
Cheers Ed, do you think Vazquez or Malcom would be more likely? I hope Malcom (im guessing a loan with option to buy) as he seems more of a threat regarding beating players 1v1 and is more speedy.

{Ed002's Note - I cannot answer "likely" questions with confidence CB.}

2.) 05 Jul 2019 19:12:43
Fair enough Ed, can you answer this question- due to your extensive knowledge of Arsenal’s financial situation, financially who is easier to obtain?

{Ed002's Note - They will be not too far apart cost wise and there will be interest in each from other sides.}

02 Apr 2019 20:00:46
Hi Eds,

Any truth in the rumours linking us to Joan Jordan as Ramseys replacement?

Colney Bandit

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of any approach.}

1.) 07 Apr 2019 10:08:02
Any player named Joan would worry me!

Bellerin Papa Luiz Tierney
Ozil Torriera Ceballos
Pepe Laca Auba

If this team were fully fit for the whole season, where do you see them finishing? I do just hope that Xhaka is kept out of the team, ideally by Ceballos imo.

Colney Bandit

1.) 08 Aug 2019 14:43:21
4th or 5th.

2.) 08 Aug 2019 14:47:24
That's most people's big concern C B mate, once you start trying to find room for Xhaka your already putting yourself at a disadvantage 9/ 10.
No disrespect to Xhaka as a person but could Liverpool carry him for a season and get 96 points? City 97 points having to play Xhaka?
I'd play Guendouzi in place of Ozil in your side mate simply because of giving more to the defence because no back 4 can cope on thier own in today's game and the midfieild two or three are going to have to put in a shift defensively if we are going to improve this season.
Sunday I'd go
Maitland Niles Papa Chambers Monreal
Torreira Ceballos
Auba Lacca Pepe
Let Luis be 3rd CB when needed and DM at other times.
Keep it tight at the back Sunday and we will win but simply go for it big style and it's anyone's call.
Patience and discipline will beat pure enthusiasm and posivity most days over a season.

3.) 08 Aug 2019 15:12:17
Interesting line up G62!
Maybe DM would be the position where Luiz will make the most difference to the team, as long as we don't have to play Mustafi at CB.
A team without both Mustafi and Xhaka is miles better then with them in there, and when Bellerin and Holding (and possibly Tierney) gets back in the team it actually looks quite promising. :)

4.) 08 Aug 2019 15:42:09
Hi Stockholm mate I think if you can start a game with 11 players who probably won't let you down you've got a chance, unfortunately for Xhaka and Mustafi they both consistently let the team down so your so often having to make up for them rather than benefitting from their inclusion in the vast majority of games.
If we have to or Emery choses to include them we will always be up against it from the start of a game.

5.) 08 Aug 2019 15:53:10
Bellerin - Luiz - Holding - Tierney
Guendouzi or Willock
Pepe - Ceballos - Aubameyang

6.) 08 Aug 2019 17:25:14
It would be a crime against football to not play Ozil behind Aubameyang, Lacazette and Pepé.

09 Jul 2019 13:10:35
Hi Eds,

I've read online that we are one of a few clubs (others being the milan clubs) interested in Erick Pulgar, and that we may be willing to trigger his £11m release clause. Any truth in this?

Colney Bandit

{Ed002's Note - Arsenal cannot "trigger" his "release clause".}

02 Jul 2019 11:41:00
Hi Eds,

I read online somewhere that apparently the operating FFP year rolls over come August. Therefore, come August (due to new sponsorship deals and what not) we should have significantly more than the 45m transfer budget touted to spend. Is there any truth in this? Any response appreciated.

12 Jun 2019 20:47:08
Hi Eds,

Do you see Ozil staying at Arsenal beyond this transfer window? Is there any interest in him from other clubs despite his wages?

Colney Bandit

{Ed002's Note - Try searching.}

1.) 12 Jun 2019 21:57:54
If it's true Emery is desperate to offload Mesut I'd have thought he'd be elsewhere next season, i like Mesut but if Emery really doesn't want him surely it makes sense to try and save money on his wages.
There must be a big club out there somewhere that fancies they're Chances of getting the best out of Mesut Ozil again especially at a heavily reduced cost.

{Ed002's Note - It is not as simple as you think. The wages are vast - which limits the target audience. The fee needs to be offset against his demands which the club cannot control. And so it goes.}

2.) 12 Jun 2019 23:03:31
Fair comment Ed002, there doesn't seem any simple way out for anyone player club or manager, personally I'd have thought it was in everyone's interst to find a way if possible, for Mesut the money is huge but he won't get another go at being a football player and he will be a long time retired when his playing career is over, for Arsenal it's simply a case of trying to come out the best it can from one of many poor decisions it's made in recent years and for Emery if he succeeds in parting company with Ozil he absolutely needs us to be better without him and for Mesut not to get back to his Real best elsewhere.
It's a tricky one and the stakes are high for all.

{Ed002's Note - You are right.}

02 Oct 2018 12:28:40
It really bugs me that we haven't signed a natural winger in what feels like forever. If you look at the top teams in the league (city, lpool, chelsea) they all play with 2 natural wingers with pace, trickery, and both goals and assists up their sleeves. In contrast, we are currently playing with a striker (allbeit a WC one in auba) and a no. 10 (ozil) , meaning that both their attacking and defensive positioning FOR WINGERS is poor. Both players are always trying to play down the middle up front and in the hole respectively. This a) reduces our team width and therefore threat from wide positions, which results in more defenders marking Laca, and/ or b) results in nacho and bellerin having to provide the width, which in term results in us being EXTREMELY vulnerable to counter attacks as they are usually so far up the pitch. I honestly think 2 natural wingers who also know and understand their defensive duties would take our team to the next level, both directly offensively, and indirectly defensively (taking the burden off the full backs to provide said width) . I really hope at least 1 winger is signed in Jan, and hopefully if Nelson has a successful loan spell in Germany, he can hold down one of the winger positions for years to come.

Colney Bandit

1.) 02 Oct 2018 13:51:04
Not many teams play with out and out wingers anymore in a 4 4 2 system most wingers are now more supporting strikers than traditional wingers as was.
If we buy more winger type players they have to come at the expense of Ozil Pea or Lacasette because you've got to have a midfield 3 that covers the full backs attacks and even then the full backs need to take it in turns rather than both bomb forward at the same time.
We are top heavy with central attacking players and we need to make a chioce on them if we are going to buy new players who are more suited to providing width.
Belerin gets so much stick but he is being asked a lot of in every game to both provide 90% of our width and be an ever reliable full back at the same time.
We need to restructure our squad or find a way of making the players we have gel in their natural positions, Pea is a brilliant round peg being shoehorned in a square hole when played out wide and Lacasette the same if Pea plays central.
Lacasette and Pea down the middle or sell one of them in my opinion and the same with Mesut, play him in yje hole or let him go.

2.) 02 Oct 2018 14:03:30
Agree with that Colney, should of cut our losses with Ramsey in the summer and got what we could and replaced him with a winger that better fit emerys system.

3.) 02 Oct 2018 15:30:46
imo a winger is one who can hug the touchline, beat full backs to get crosses in and also score from the far post IE your Sanes, Sterlings, Manes, Salahs etc types of players that we simply lack (potentially Iwobi could fill a void here if he keeps up his performances) . A midfield 3 won't have to cover full backs that get forward if full backs don't need to get forward as much due to playing natural wingers who stay wide which was sort of my point. From what I've seen so far if Emery is to stick to his 4231/ 433 (pretty much the same formation IMO) then at least 1 winger is needed (ideally move ozil 10, get a new RW and let Ramsey rot in reserves) whilst Auba needs to be a bit more disciplined with his role if he is to stay as our LW.

4.) 02 Oct 2018 15:32:40
On top of that i'd love us to sign an exciting player who can get the crowd going by making full backs look silly e.g zaha. We haven't had a winger who can beat players with skill and pace since Hleb! (Don't argue Sanchez because all he did was cut back onto his stronger foot from the left, although it was super effective)

5.) 02 Oct 2018 15:56:29
While i don't disagree with all that's been said, our attacking options are not our problem at the minute. Right back, center back and holding mid are far more important and later on a left back. We have invested heavily in attack and we do not now struggle to score, in fact we are scoring as much as any team. Its purely our defending that is holding us to ransom. I actually think our attack is as good and exciting as it has been for years.

6.) 02 Oct 2018 18:45:07
If we keep Ozil Pea and Lacasette the we have to play 3 4 3 with the full backs being eithr wingers who also have to be fullbacks or fullbacks who have to be wingers.
You can't play Pea Mesut Lacasette and 2 wingers and 2 fullbacks all at the same time.

7.) 02 Oct 2018 20:14:54
I'd like to see 433, but effectively 4213
Torreira xhaka/ guen
New winger laca pea
The best form of defence is a good offence, make the opposition full backs fear going forward, that's not the case when either Ramsey or ozil are the wide player, most full backs will catch them. Chelsea, City and Liverpool all play 433 with fast wingers and Chelsea and Liverpool especially are more reliant on the wingers than the forwards, if PEA embraces the position he should be able to remain just as lethal with the added space afforded to him.

8.) 02 Oct 2018 20:54:16
Do you think Pea has it in him to be a really top supporting winger rather than the star attraction main striker Eden mate?
I'm just not sure that's using him to his absolute strength and it would be the same with Lacasette too.
In my mind you either play both down the middle or sell one a buy a true wide player in his place.
Just my view but surely you've got to use what you have to their strengths or swap what you've got.

9.) 02 Oct 2018 21:30:52
For me - two up front : PEA and Laca

No compromise for either

Then either 4 4 or 3 5 behind them

In the 4 4 2 - Ozil plays the Pires role or dropped

In the 3 5 2 ( my preferred ) - he’s centre stage at the front of the 5 in the middle.

10.) 02 Oct 2018 21:48:57
The winger doesn't have to be supporting and can be the main attraction as shown by salah and hazard and messi and ronaldo in their previous incarnations, whether PEA can or wants to play their, I don't know, but a fluid interchanging front 3 of him laca and someone else could be wonderful. I want to see them both, 2 up top could work, but emery seems reluctant as do most systems these days it's either 1 or 3.

11.) 02 Oct 2018 21:52:54
I totally agree SY mate if used to thier strengths I think they could score 50 to 60 goals between them apposed to the 30 the 35 we will probably get as we are.
Mesut is the perfect man to compliment them both too.
I agree too about the 3 4 1 2 as it would buy the full backs sometime when we lose possession ancient stop them needing to be in two places at one time constantly.

Jesus 50m for Odouard?! I can appreciate he's a very good player but given the calibre of the SPL I reckon teams would still be extremely hesitant paying even 30m.

Hi Ed,

you say in the original response that Edouard is a cheaper alternative to Malen or David. How much do you think Celtic would sell him for? Because I've read a lot that David can go for ~£17.5m. Thanks.

Colney Bandit

{Ed002's Note - Gent has quoted a much higher fee than that to another side interested in JD. The €50M asking price for Malen is huge. Actually since Celtic quoted one side £30M for Odsonne Edouard and I wrote that note, another side have been quoted that bidding for the player will start at more than £50M as they accept that he will move on and .}

Hi Ed,

so you think Lacazette will stay and Auba will leave? That's annoying because would much prefer it the other way around! But guess Laca hasn't really been showing much worth over the course of the season in terms of goal output.

{Ed002's Note - Aubameyangadingdong does not wish to sign a new contract so Arsenal need to move him on this summer. Alexandre Lacazette wanted a new start elsewhere but seems to have settled.}

Hi Ed,

so are you essentially saying where other *successful* clubs have one man performing the role of DoF, we compartmentalise it into 3 or 4 different job positions? if so do you know for what reason we do this? Why wouldn't we follow a senior management structure that has given success to other clubs?

Colney Bandit

{Ed002's Note - It is rather more complex than that. I cannot answer why Arsenal work in sucj a strange way.}

Ed, why, according to you, is our Hierarchy so unappealing to top managers? I ask purely out of interest because I see you say our hierarchy is extremely wrong/ unattractive but i don't really understand what you mean by it.

Colney Bandit

{Ed002's Note - You need to go back and think why lasr summer:
Monchi (Technical Director) - no interest in working with no clarification of responsibilities
Andoni Zubizarreta (Technical Director) - no interest in working in the strange set up the club has - which is why Sven Mislintat walked out.
Marc Overmars (Technical Director) not interested in working in the structiure Arsenal has
Edu (Technical Director) open to taking the job where he has minimal responsibility.
Francis Cagigao was promised a promotion to become overall head of scouting, and Steve Rowley was likely to step up from his role in youth development. Chief negotiator Huss Fahmy will stay in the same position. So what will Edu be doing?
It is a shambles.

If we could get 20m for him then that would a be steal. IMO AMN has a higher ceiling at CM and can provide adequate cover for RB. Selling Chambers for 20m and re-investing that e.g putting it towards getting a top defender seems the most logical option.

your argument about Wenger not having the players you mentioned is somewhat weakened by the fact that every other team in the premier league also strengthens their squads! Its also worth mentioning that some players bought by Wenger towards the end of his era were bought with a reputation and failed to live up to it under his management (e. g Xhaka, Mustafi.

In my personal opinion we will get 9/ 12 remaining points, giving us 75. This should give us enough to get top 4 given both Man Utds and Chelseas poor form (plus they have to play each other which will hopefully be a draw and Man Utd have to play citeh)
