New reports stating Gabriel Jesus accepted a "significant salary drop" to join Barca. Not certain how I feel about that. The transfer fee seemed so low to offset the massive wages Barcelona would have to absorb. Well, those massive wages got slashed and Arsenal still got a fee of relative pocket change.
The whole situation takes me back to Willian.
Say what you will about his on-pitch performances (ok, it was putrid) . But he had enough integrity to realize his dream move was back in Brazil, so he terminated the contract. He could have raked in 240k a week for two years but told Arsenal 'Thanks, but you can keep your money'. Doubt we'll ever see anything like that again for a good long while.

Hi Eds, happy new year to you all. One name previously on Arsenal's radar that has gone a bit quiet is Palermo's Abel Hernandez. Is there still an interest? Cheers.
{Ed002's Note - Nothing new. Roma has a sustained interest in Hernandez. Napoli, Arsenal and Dortmund have enquired in recent weeks and been told he is not available. Naples are still pushing.}

Hi Ed. Any chance Arsenal may pursue Hugo Almeida in January? His contract expires in June, has shown a desire to play in England, and has 7 goals in 7 so far this year. Cons would be his age (29) and he may be cup-tied. Thoughts? Cheers. {Ed044's Note - I don't know mate.}

Interesting results and I agree. Alvarez has shown he will throw his toys out the pram.
What happens if, in a couple months, he goes full Lukaku at Chelsea and says, 'Nah, I don't want to be here and I only want Barca.' Who will inevitably go, 'We can only do a loan at this time, soz, maybe we can scrounge together 30 mil for you in a year or so.'

Kinda like how Gyokeres did at Sporting? No one seems to care now. Point is, as fans, none of us are really certain what promises may or may not have been made between players and management.
Alvarez may have a legitimate grievance.
And as far as checking out in 2 months and demanding Barca. well, it's certainly possible. But I'd trust Arteta and Berta to have vetted the situation enough to be confident that wouldn't happen.

Hi Ed014. I'm with you in regards to feeling a bit underwhelmed by Zubimendi. You're a fan of Baleba, but I'd be all-in on Andrey Santos. There are some whispers that Arsenal are interested but nothing substantial. He seems to want regular playing time, which could be difficult with Caicedo, Lavia, Enzo ahead of him. Any info you might have on him? Cheers.
{Ed014's Note - Santos is more of a central midfielder where as Baleba is a DM.
Baleba is premier league proven, which is always a bonus.
Santos apparently wants to stay and fight for a place but like you say, he faces stiff competition, Lavia though appears to be somewhat injury prone.
I’d just prefer we got a younger midfielder with the experience we all ready have there.

We don’t have anyone who can receive the ball out of defence with their back to play. Zubimendi is excellent at this, Rice is better further forward or box to box.
Although Zubimendi transfer sounds less than certain after his comments about Real Madrid and Alonso, yesterday.

I think this signing needs to be viewed as a perfect compliment to Rice. So a player similar to Jorginho rather than Partey. Zubimendi feels like a good fit to me.
Haven't paid enough attention to Baleba to determine if he would fit. I would quite like Adam Wharton if the deal for Zubimendi didn't materialize. If Partey were to leave and we wanted to have a similar role, surely Lewis-Skelly would be a good internal solution as well?

Don’t disagree Sharpie - hope Merino grows into the team and EPL pace better next year. I like him but prefer him in Europe when game is a little slower. He’s got a great eye for goal and takes up some great positions but he’s a bit robotic in midfield and should never replace Rice. Not sure Merino and Rice give us the right balance as both like to get forward and only Rice is getting back to defend with any energy. If we pull Rice back, does that take too much away from his game. I thought I bought Rice as CDM and Merino was the CM. But we are pushing Rice further forward and don’t think merino has the athleticism to be box to box like thst. What do I know… I think I agree with you.

Was anybody else surprisingly impressed by Ferdi Kadioglu against Georgia? (What an immensely entertaining match by the way) If the rumors are true, a Martinelli/ Kadioglu tandem flying down the left would scare out of the opposition.

Question for Ed002 if you're around mate. (not Arsenal-related but had no idea where to post this). If you have the time (and inclination), could you provide your take on the latest controversy regarding the 2018/2022 World Cup report? The German Football League president has warned that UEFA may quit FIFA over it. do you see this as a chance to accelerate (and perhaps even facilitate) the formation of the new pan-European breakaway league? (My apologies in advance - I realize you're not fond of speculation, but your opinions on this subject would be most welcomed). Cheers. --dk
{Ed002's Note - I could spend hours explaining my views, but in simple terms it is a shambles. Putting aside the trivial accusations thrown at The FA, the Australian FA, Korea and Japan, the fundamental issues surrounds the naivety that some people at FIFA were of the opinion that the summary report they have released will have cleared up the issues. Clearly it has not done so. The problem is that neither WC would end up being moved regardless of what the activity reported. It could have been handled much, much better and FIFA are still liable to on going legal issues with the USA and pending issues with the Australian FA. Putting aside the report, I would expect that we will soon see a push for an independent review of the operations of FIFA which may well result in a clear out of many of the senior staff.
UEFA will steer clear and the German FA representative is jumping the gun. And there is no relation to any changes the clubs are discussing.}
1.) It would be great if people could believe in the organization that controlled the game but I'm not sure that is ever going to happen sadly, we're there's massive amounts of money there will always be doubts about honesty and integrity.
Maybe I'm just cynical and believe power and massive amounts of money corrupt all in the end no matter how good their intention to begin with ( even me :-) if I was in that position no matter how much I hope it wouldn't happen

Schalke apparently have come to terms with Leverkusen's Sidney Sam to join them next summer. Perhaps a good omen that Julian Draxler will be on his way to the Emirates?

Right now I'd consider LW a concern - Eze hasn't exactly covered himself in glory on the rare occasions he featured there. That could change. We'll see. But, if that concern evolves into worry (or, hopefully not, full-blown panic) , at least Arsenal seem well-poised financially to make a major signing in the winter window.

I may be wrong, but aren't Arsenal capped at two Prem loans (Neto, Sterling) ? Would like to see them make a push for Matias Soule - had a nice season at Frosinone last year but hasn't seemed to settle at Roma.

Rumour has it Benfica want to sign Joao Felix but are trying to generate the funds. If true (and if Partey departs to Italy/ Saudi Arabia) I hope Arsenal push for Florentino Luis - could be available for significantly less than his release clause and still less expensive than Lavia or Tchouameni.

This is only conjecture, but maybe Mik/ Edu could see Thomas Partey has an eye on the exit door this summer. With Xhaka virtually certain to return to Germany, this leaves only Jorginho and Elneny (maybe Kiwior) to anchor midfield. Would the 100m+ be better spent on Declan Rice, or something potentially like a Romeo Lavia/ Manu Kone combo?

I thought Gyokeres was very poor, and that write-up is bang on and not harsh at all. That last sentence was clearly evident when Madueke attacked the byline and delivered a lovely cross which should have resulted in an easy tap-in. After, Madueke just stood there in disbelief, shaking his head. The video should be pretty easy to find online.
If Vik keeps playing like this I'd wager Arsenal will have serious internal discussions if Merino should be 2nd choice CF.

Gunner62, I admire your optimism, mate, but I wouldn't sleep on City or Chelsea. City have the most elite striker on the planet in Haaland (plus some considerable weapons in Foden and Cherki - that new Rat to replace Bernardo Silva) , and Alonso actually went undefeated in a league that normally kowtows to Bayern Munich.
Two weeks ago I was confident Arsenal would walk away with the league. Not as much now.
