Found this gem on the Chelsea page regarding what happens and what costs involved in transfers. Needless to say from ED002

{Ed002's Note - The process should be along the lines of: Clubs will typically informally ask an agent (a) if the player is going to be available, and (b) would the player consider a move to the club. There may be some broad discussion on the sort of deal that would be offered but no more than that. If the answer is yes, it is then necessary for the club to approach the player's club to ask if they would be willing to sell and if they would grant permission to speak to a player's agent formally to negotiate about a transfer and even to the player about actually making a move. This will typically involve the showing of serious interest (perhaps through an offer) or actually agreeing a fee and responsibility for any significant costs (agents fees etc. ) . Once this has happened the club will be able to speak formally to the player's agent and perhaps the player himself to look at the package that will be involved. Many players are looked at and discussed at a high-level with agents and clubs; a subset of those have an offer placed; a subset of those involve discussions with the player's club; a subset of those involve discussions over terms, and; a subset of those go ahead.

Agents will often try and get more specific details of wages and other financials before they should - but most clubs are happy to follow this process. Players will often talk to other players about moves but, whilst wrong, is tolerated as it would be impossible to manage.

Alternatively, a selling club may ask an agent to find a new club for a player and he will talk directly to potential selling sides about the fee, personal terms and interest. They will typically grant permission for the player to also speak to interested parties.

The rest of the time agents will be on fishing trips trying to find interest in their players.

In terms of what happens when the negotiations take place, broad agreement (player available and open to discussions, understanding of the price) will already have been reached. The clubs will meet to discuss the details of the transfer fee, other costs associated with the move and the structure of the payments and any additional fees (e. g another €5M for winning the Champions League etc. ) but this does not take a "few days".

It might be an apt time to explain again about the cost of transfers (excluding wages) . What is paid by the buying club would typically include:

(a) Transfer fee - the big number.
(b) Any levy applied by the local FA – 5% for the Premier League.
(c) Tax due on the transfer fee – typically this will be VAT (at varying rates across Europe) some or all of which should be reclaimable.
(d) Agent fees – this may be to one or more agents (as an example, Liverpool have spent more than £100M plus VAT on agent fees over the past three years (nearly double the next highest) including £28M last season alone when only spending a tiny amount on transfers) .
(e) Tax due on the agent fees – typically this is VAT at the local rate where the agent bills from – it is not reclaimable.
(f) Intermediary fees – this may be to one or more sponging leeches (what do you mean you have a super agent? ) .
(g) Tax due on the Intermediary fees – typically this is VAT at the local rate where the Intermediary bills from – it is not reclaimable.
(h) Signing on fee to the player (possibly including non-reclaimable VAT if the player is VAT registered) .
(i) Legal fees.
(j) VAT on legal fees which is reclaimable.
(k) Moving/ relocation costs for the player.
(l) VAT on moving/ relocation costs which is reclaimable.
(m) Solidarity and Training Contribututions (see below) .
(n) Paying up insurance costs to the selling club (usually waived) .

What is paid by the selling club would typically include:

(a) If the player is under 24 and moving between different football associations, a Solidarity contribution paid to his previous clubs responsible for his training - this is 5% of the transfer fee received (apportioned 5% of the contribution for each year from the season of his 12th birthday to the season of his 15th birthday and 10% of the contribution for each season from his 16th to 23rd birthdays) . This is generally (there are exceptions) recoverable from the buying club but responsibility (that is meant to be with the buying club) can be assigned to the selling club.
(b) If the player moves to a higher category club (all clubs being categorised 1 to 4) then Training Compensation is due for the period of age 12 to 21. Compensation is due to all clubs when the player turns from amateur to professional and thereafter only when he moves from his final training club to another club. The initial training compensation is levied at the training costs associated with Category 4 clubs. The subsequent figure is agreed between the sides or tribunal if necessary. This is generally (there are exceptions) recoverable from the buying club but responsibility (that is meant to be with the buying club) can be assigned to the selling club.
(c) Any monies owed to the player if he did not request a transfer – again this is 5% of the transfer fee received.
(d) Any monies owed to the player in terms of his contract (typically outstanding owed wages (not future wages) and bonuses) .
(e) Any money contractually due to a previous club as the result of a sell-on clause. }.

1.) 02 Aug 2022 14:18:50
Blimey who would have thought it was that complicated (and expensive! ) .

Fascinating insight from Ed002, the font of all knowledge.

2.) 03 Aug 2022 09:25:22
So when we say a player has been bought for 50 million does it mean just the transfer fee and all he rest are added or is it inclusive of everything if not most of the items given?

{Ed002's Note - That would be the Transfer Fee. All the rest is added on.}

3.) 03 Aug 2022 12:53:17
. and then we complain that it's all taking too long when in actual fact we should be asking how on earth do they manage to get multiple deals through in a single transfer window. I don't know about anyone else but multimillion investments at my place of work would take considerably longer!

4.) 04 Aug 2022 07:33:44
G Jesus's transfer fees was supposed to be 45 million pounds, so the total can be anything like 60?

28 Jul 2022 11:15:48
Hi Ed002 has there been any interest in Ainsley Maitland-Niles or do Arsenal still see as someone they want to keep? Is he now open to staying as right back / Midfield cover? Thanks in advance.

{Ed002's Note - Ainsley Maitland-Niles (RM/RWB) will be looking for regular playing time. Arsenal will try to keep him. Roma will not take up their option. Southampton and Newcastle may offer options. Could run down his contract which would financially be a good deal for the player. Another unhappy bunny.}

1.) 28 Jul 2022 19:52:53
Thanks Ed much appreciated.

2.) 29 Jul 2022 07:41:56
Can’t please them all Ed lol.

{Ed014's Note - yeah that’s the life of a pro, he’s never shown he’s good enough here or on loan so grab a few bucks and let him go.

3.) 29 Jul 2022 09:41:49
Championship players at best

Should of taken the money wolves offered.

4.) 29 Jul 2022 18:27:04
To be fair I`m glad he`s unhappy - shows he cares and wants to play not doing a Winston Bogarde. If like Torreira Hector Leno etc he is not in MA plans then he should be sold and any money we owe him should be paid.

Not good enough for this new Arsenal, would think even ED014 would prefer Tielemans to him - although . COYG.

{Ed014's Note - let’s just not have either! ??

5.) 30 Jul 2022 15:30:03
Let it go!
Let it go!
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go!
Let it go!
Turn away and slam the door.

{Ed014's Note - ????

20 Jul 2022 17:10:09
Hi Ed002 have done a search and it has been a while since a last update where you intimated Tielemans Melo and Fabian Ruiz were players we have looked at. Is that the order of preference and are we actively pursuing Tielemans and left field are we looking at Paqueta seriously? Thanks in advance and for all info you impart.

{Ed002's Note - There is no real order. I think Melo may still be the best option.

Arthur Melo (CM/DM) Available - has not worked out in Europe. Barcelona skinned Juventus of Pjanic and cash and it has largely been a disaster in Turin. Juventus want to revamp the midfield with Arthur, McKennie, Ramsey and Rabiot all seen as surplus to requirements. All are for sale and all can be used in exchanges. The problem remains finding takers for the likes of these players who pull a total of €600k in weekly wages will be difficult - but there are mugs out there. Arsenal have asked after taking Arthur on loan - and that might be attractive if a buyer can't be found and Arsenal were to pay his wages. Juventus could look to grabbing unhappy bunny Gabiel as part of the deal. I am sure there is knocking on the door of St James Park.

Youri Tielemans (CM) right now he will not sign a new contract so will be available in the summer at a reduced fee. His agent confirmed that there is interest from Real Madrid who are looking for a Luka Modric replacement, interest from Spurs and that he has been approached by a third party representing Newcastle, but Spurs and Newcastle are unlikely destinations. He is aware that other clubs, including Bayern Munich and Liverpool, have scouted the player but not declared an interest. Interest of the Manchester sides has probably gone as both are looking at other midfield options but they will be back if they cannot get their first choice players - and MU are struggling. Arsenal and Juventus provide wildcard options but Arsenal will have to focus on fixing other issues in the squad first and Juventus, whilst needing significant midfield changes are looking to preferred options. I suspect that Real Madrid will shift their interest leaving Manchester United and Arsenal to work on a transfer.

Fabian Ruiz (CM/DM/AM) was seen by Real Madrid as a replacement for Kroos and/or Modric but is not first choice - although they could still turn to him and are keeping their interest known to Napoli - but it is likely waning in consideration of other options. There have been discussions with his agent involving Manchester City, Arsenal, Newcastle and Bayern Munich - although the player is not keen on a move to England or Germany. Napoli have also met and spoken with Barcelona who see him as a possible replacement for Pjanic but they have to integrate their youngsters. I am not aware of any approach to his agent or Napoli by Liverpool. His agent thinks that PSG and Manchester United could also look to him. Do not lose sight of Inter. Wage demands are putting clubs off.}

1.) 20 Jul 2022 20:44:42
Thank you Ed002 great info much appreciated! We aren’t looking to be daft and use Gabriel as an incentive to Juventus for Melo are we? Have a great week and thanks again.

2.) 20 Jul 2022 20:58:39
Oops read again and you covered Gabriel and possible swap.

3.) 20 Jul 2022 22:51:18
Ed002, with Bremer going to Juventus do you expect Gabriel (CB) to stay at Arsenal?

{Ed002's Note - Gabriel Magalhaes (CB) Unhappy with the club and agent has been seeking options for some months. Attractive to Barcelona as he is left footed and would be cheaper than a number of other targets, but Barcelona say wage demands are too high. As with other transfers, Barcelona will look to offload one or more of their unwanted players as part of the deal - Memphis Depay may be the only one of interest to Arsenal. Juventus will offer an option after de Ligt has left - with Rabiot and Melo available to trade. Arsenal want him to stay, and like Salisu, could force him to stay.}

4.) 21 Jul 2022 06:02:04
Hi Ed, you point to Gabriel as an unhappy bunny. Another case of Arteta and a personality clash? Big trouble if so.

{Ed002's Note - The issues with the players like Gabriel and Salisu are about more than that.}

5.) 21 Jul 2022 10:54:59
Would you care to share why he is unhappy Ed, as I’ve seen reports saying he is very happy at arsenal so just wondering what the situation is thanks have a great day.

{Ed002's Note - We are not going to open that up again.}

6.) 21 Jul 2022 12:30:22
Thanks for insight Ed002. The whole makeup of the club at current is concerning me. Sounds like we’re a bit of a ticking time bomb….

7.) 21 Jul 2022 13:16:09
Seeing that a deal in principle has been agreed with Tielemans but it's dependent on departures - could be a number of different players but clubs preference is to move on Xhaka and Torreria.

30 Jun 2022 11:17:12
Hi Ed`s Thanks for all info so far . Apologies if too many questions but a) are Arsenal interested in Bremer b) will Arsenal look to sell Saliba if Martinez signs c) as we were in for Raphinha are Arsenal looking to cash in on Saka Thanks in Advance VTH.

{Ed002's Note - (a) There are two representatives of Torino in London at the moment discussing three players who are available for sale with various clubs. Arsenal do not appear to be involved. (b) Arsenal are continuing to mess Saliba about - nobody knows what will happen. (c) No.}

1.) 30 Jun 2022 12:04:03
Thanks Ed . Glad we`re not looking to cash in on Saka . Saliba is a right mess all round and has been from the start including the St Etienne cup final. Guess it`s a wait and see as you say. Have a great weekend VTH.

{Ed002's Note - And you.}

2.) 01 Jul 2022 20:38:21
Looks like Martinez is going to United ?.

3.) 01 Jul 2022 21:16:13
Martinez would be added as cover for lb amd cb and can also play cdm so it has nothing to do with saliba if he signs, saliba gabs on front of him b4 he starts a game.

17 Jun 2022 15:22:42
We haven`t as you`ve said Ed02 covered ourselves in glory often in the transfer market but just wanted to know if Fiorentina are being cheeky to say the least in what they offered for Torreira and was there not an agreement to pay much more? Same for Bellerin please only if you have time. Thanks in advance VTH.

{Ed002's Note - Fiorentina were never going to pay the full option price. At least they have made an offer. And this will not come as a shock to Arsenal.

Lucas Torreira (DM) Fiorentina will keep him at the right price - but not the price Arsenal wants. Lazio may be an option again but they have a preferred target. With Matic signed Roma interest will probably have gone.
Hector Bellerin (RB) Real Betis would like to keep him but Roma offer an option.}

1.) 17 Jun 2022 21:27:05
Thanks Ed made my day in other reply where you said This will happen I think regarding Jesus which fills me with confidence we are at least in with a good chance . Only place I trust with transfer info. Enjoy Cornwall VTH.

So here`s the thing! Pepe! We`ve had no interest in him and he`s on £140000 a week. He`s saying the right things - trained hard over the Summer changed certain things etc .

I haven`t seen the USA games live - has he changed? Or is he just staying put and picking up great wages? Me provided we buy another Forward / Winger am happy to have as cover for Saka . Or has he had his turn - not good enough - and we should sell and buy a better forward/ winger?

Whichever way it`s diced up £72 mill was wasted which is why we are currently spending like we are to make up for some terrible transfers! VTH.

{Ed014's Note - from what another poster said I think he’s pretty much doing exactly the same thing, just not working hard enough off the ball.

Long time left in the window so you never know.

1.) 25 Jul 2022 20:00:36
Sell him for a cut price - he’s just not going to do it .

2.) 25 Jul 2022 20:32:05
Don't think we could give him away Banbury if we wanted to mate, no clubs going to pay those wages, an Ozil type loan where Arsenal pay large part of his wages still but saves on whatever the other club contributes.

It hasn't worked out so a solution that works for everyone's advantage is the sensible way out for everyone involved.

3.) 26 Jul 2022 12:40:16
I think most clubs would rather buy Sharpie`s watch! It`s why I think that`s why we`ll end up keeping him.

4.) 26 Jul 2022 13:18:58
Sussex, you stay away from my watch! There's no need for fighting talk like that.

Seriously though, it sounds like Edu and the team are trying to correct problems like this. Will they always get it right? Of course not. But as a fan base, we can be satisfied if they get more purchases right than they do wrong.

Every club have issues like this - look at Chelsea. A reported £700K in weekly wages being spent on £180 million of talent that they don't want and can't get rid of.

There are inherent risks in bringing in ANY player because regardless of how good they were at their last club, the dynamics and environment at their new club might not be conducive to them being spectacular for their new employers.

5.) 26 Jul 2022 18:12:18
At least Sharpies watch keeps running…….

6.) 26 Jul 2022 19:48:45
Unless its a STOP watch ;)

7.) 26 Jul 2022 22:26:21
Sadly, I think Sussex is correct, we will either have to let him leave on a free, and even then, how many teams in the world would pay him the 140k a week, or we send him out on loan, while still paying most of his salary. The latter seems a waste, although I guess we will hope he plays every week and makes himself valuable. However, we will have an issue replacing him, in that whoever comes in, will know they are going to be second fiddle to Saka, so we are not going to attract top tier players to sit on the bench. In that regards, Pepe holds a massive advantage, in that he already knows he is a benchwarmer, and on his day, a useful sub, so I would actually prefer we keep him, rather than give him away, or worse, pay him to play for someone else.

8.) 27 Jul 2022 13:15:26
Don`t be sad I`m correct Epping - celebrate like it`s 1999 as that according to my missus is the last time I was correct ( and I`m pretty sure she misheard me back then ) VTH.

07 Jul 2022 21:58:00
A year after becoming the Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo is now the new Al Ittihad manager.

In case you`ve never heard of them they`re a trophyless club from North London VTH.

2.) 21 Jun 2022 14:29:26
Absolutely Mal we should start a petition.

3.) 21 Jun 2022 19:38:11
I agree Mark, but why not just change the head on one of the old our of date statues,

Not a popular idea? OK maybe not then ???.

27 Apr 2022 09:32:50
Too much time on my hands! Regardless of where we finish and assuming Saliba Tomi and Tierney all ready for next season would you be happy with Gabriel Jesus, Abraham, Bissouma ( approx £130 mill ) and £20 mill on left back cover - with White covering Tomi and Saliba at centre back? If not who? I`d be very happy by the way :) VTH.

1.) 27 Apr 2022 10:24:21
I’d be happy with Jesus and bissouma amd one of Nunez or the Napoli striker (not even going to attempt to spell his name lol) have a great day Sussex.

2.) 27 Apr 2022 11:42:01
A top striker, a young up and coming option, plus Biereth up from the reserves would do me for strikers. Bissouma, a young LB to compete with Tavarez, and a backup GK to replace Leno and I think we'd be sorted.

3.) 27 Apr 2022 12:00:54
We need 2 strikers min and a strong CM to link the play

my Dream List would be 1 of

Main Striker
Jonathan David
Lautaro Martinez
Andre Silva
Karim Benzema (Dare I link him with arsenal again, but if they do get Mpbappe is it a maybe? )

Younger Striker
Darwin Núñez
Alexander Isak
Patson Daka
Victor Osimhen

Centre Mid
James Ward Prowse
Connor Gallagher
Yives Bissomma
Jude Bellingham (Yes I know I am dreaming a little here)

again I know we will need other players like a replacement for Leno etc but these are the 3 positions where I believe we can add some real star quality.

Please don't mock me to much for dreaming haha.

4.) 27 Apr 2022 13:15:00
£70m for Abraham, I’d guess 60-70 for Jesus and 50 for Bissouma? That’s like 190m.

5.) 27 Apr 2022 14:48:24
Not having Abraham doubled in value - fill your boots on the £63 mill buy back clause! £50 mill for him Jesus in last year of contract hearing £35 mill and £45 - £50 mill for Bissouma. Maybe your right though in which case the clubs with deep pockets will buy these players so counts both our clubs out.
Think we will receive some reasonable money for Leno Torreira Guendozy Mari and AMN possibly Xhaka and even Pepe although Bellingham and Benzema Hampshire did make me chuckle! Perhaps throw in Haaland and Mbappe too. Have a great day all VTH.

6.) 27 Apr 2022 19:40:48
I’d be happy with Dennis and Ian.

7.) 27 Apr 2022 21:07:30
Yeah, good list Sussex. Let’s throw in Rafinia to replace Pepe as well. But seriously, Bissouma and a striker is where I want us to splash the cash, if we have any. As for the striker, I have no real preference, although Jesus is suddenly showing he can score. Also a cheaper GK to replace Leno, but who would be happy to be the number 2 (Snigger) .

On that I would be more than happy with Tim Krull, always been a great keeper, and still getting plenty of practice at Norwich. He may not want to step back from first team, but with Norwich going back down, maybe he would be tempted.

8.) 27 Apr 2022 21:08:59
I like the list HamshireG mate. i'd also add-

Armando Broja

Centre Mid:
Konrad Laimer
Boubacar Kamara

I think most on your list are gettable IF we get champions league.

9.) 27 Apr 2022 21:52:06
Sussex the buy back only applies to Chelsea, so in theory Roma could ask 100m for him from Arsenal if Chelsea have no interest in buying him back. 24 goals this season + him being English and PL clubs always having higher prices quoted, I v much doubt Roma would accept 50m.

{Ed014's Note - thank god for that I was worried we might actually try and buy him!

10.) 27 Apr 2022 23:25:03
Yes Fuser I know but don’t think there would be any takers at all for £63 mill. Way too much! Not a fan then Ed ??.

11.) 28 Apr 2022 05:42:12
Strikers jesus broja mirovic from Fulham
Midfielders ward prowse Gallagher neves Phillips from Leeds any one of them would be nice
Defender spence livramento
Goalkeeper back up.

12.) 28 Apr 2022 13:27:19
The error was made not signing Abraham for €35M before the Roma move. He’s an Arsenal fan and even held out for the move but Edu and Arsenal of course didn’t act decisively.
I think paying over the odds now wouldn’t make sense if Gabriel from city could be got for around €35M.

13.) 28 Apr 2022 13:27:19

To be fair Shambo we had Auba and Laca ( how did that work out for us ) . Vlahovic was seen as the answer in January. I have never thought Eddie as a main striker, my heart says yes but head no. Can we afford to give him that run in the team? Maybe he fires us to top 4 and it clicks in which case maybe just Jesus. Watched a feature on him - from the favelas - a fighter and we`d be lucky to have him I think VTH.

I also think the owners were shocked at opposition to Super League and from what I read wanted / needed to get fans back onside. It was a dark time and I even looked at season tickets at the Amex - wanted nothing to do with it - nor LIV golf for that matter.

Since then they`ve had a plan spent a lot but well and revamped the playing staff getting rid of the loafers. I think we have young talented hungry players with the hungry aspect the final piece and a prerequisite of players bought in.

Liked the cut of Xhaka`s gib on the All Or Nothing and hope he keeps his form up. Dare I say he looked a real goal threat too. Was completely unseeable a year ago Tierney would be a sub - testament to the recruitment.

Don`t write Tielemans off Ed but Fofana £80 mill after yesterday not for me - rather have Martinez! ( Only joking ) COYG onwards and upwards.

{Ed014's Note - I don’t want Tielemens because I don’t want a player who doesn’t have the work ethic required now to play for Arsenal.

I don’t question that he has some talent but I do question the fact he’s lazy and like Luke Shaw he always looks like he’s a little over weight.
